You have probably become accustomed to logging off and/or shutting down your computer when you are finished working for the day, however when leaving your desk for a short period many forget to lock their computers.

As you may have access to sensitive or confidential information, locking your screen is a very important security measure to prevent unauthorised use of your school ICT account. If you leave your computer unlocked and unattended, it is open for anybody to use and access your files, email and information about students which can be accessed via SIMS. Locking your computer will not shut down any programs, it will just prevent anybody else from accessing them. You will be required to enter your password in order to unlock the computer.

The quickest way to lock your computer is to press the Windows Key + L at the same time. You can also do it by pressing Ctrl + Alt + Delete and selecting ‘Lock this computer’. You will also be able to lock your screen via the start menu, at the bottom you will see a ‘Shut Down’ button with an arrow to the right of it, clicking the arrow will open a submenu. Within that menu, click the ‘Lock’ option.
